Young Picasso, 1901
Bold, blazing tangerine-orange and shocking whites burst off the shimmering, blue-black tiles. Before our eyes, the Master himself surges from darkness, into life. Picasso was only 19 when he painted Yo - Picasso which personified his launch into the public eye. Yo - Picasso is a masterpiece of the senses, meant to be experienced both visually and emotionally. BellaVetro invites you to reach out and connect. Seize the moment; lean forward, feel the flow of the mosaic. The cascade of fire, energy, and ambition is your own flickering connection to Picasso. Picasso, Self Portrait 1907
The world of European art was undergoing a revolution in the 20th century; Pablo Picasso led the way. In a time of traditionalist overthrow and charged innovation, Picasso transforms himself in his 1907 Self-Portrait. Gone are the subtle, fluid strokes of his 1901 Yo-Portrait - his identity is newly bound by bold lines, snapped like statement pieces. The blackened limits tiled across Picasso's face contrast sharply with back-splashes of red and yellow. A mosaic mask, staring brashly into the viewer's eyes, mirrors the Black Period's African totem inspiration. BellaVetro's mosaic shares the exotic allure, each tile bound and halting. In the words of Picasso's closest friends, "Painful and beautiful... oppressive but imprisoned"

Facing Death, 1972
Pablo Picasso's last self-portrait was done a little less than a year before his death. In this painting, the most powerful and basic emotions and tensions of life are registered and laid bare with passion, pain, and suffering as he faces inevitable death. He worked to strip the face of all illusions and forcing the viewer to stare into the face of death without consolation of religion, family or friend. This is the face of a man laid bare, undressed and naked, conscious and alone, facing the end with a sheer animal terror.

Bust of a Woman with Red Hat, 1962
Bust of a Woman with Hat is among the three portraits of Dora Maar with whom Picasso lived for a decade. This portrait of her is among his most searing. She is depicted as the weeping woman, the woman with basketwork hat; a disfigured and monstrous subject that inspired some of his most haunting works. This mask-like portrait is characterized by a face framed by arched eyebrows, and wide open eyes filled with awe. The painting shows his "colorful" relationships with women. The heightened color of the final composition, the elaborate hat and the suggestion of heavy makeup applied to the face turns the model into an icon of sensuality by means of a rich pictorial language. On a large tile mosaic, you will see what's on the face, what's inside the face and what's behind it.

The Dream, 1932
Le Reve is an oil painting by Pablo Picasso, then 50 years old, portraying his 22-year-old mistress Marie-Therese Walte, his muse in this libidinous portrait. If you look closely, this sexual message becomes obvious. The undulating lines, rounded organic shapes, and saturated hues represent the romantic nature of the dream. The gallery owner placed 13 coats of varnish creating an antique weathered look, yet velvety smooth to the touch.

Straw Hat, 1887
In this self-portrait, we see vitality of Van Gogh's use of color and the energy of his brushwork. Dressed in the yellow straw hat and work coat of the peasant laborer, this costume befits his self-image as a working man's artist. Van Gogh produced more than twenty self-portraits during his Parisian sojourn (1886-88). Short of funds but determined nevertheless to hone his skills as a figure painter, he became his own best sitter; "I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model."

This was probably painted in the winter of 1885-86 as a humorous comment on conservative academic practices. Before painting live human models, the academic routine would have included studies of skeletons, to develop an understanding of human anatomy. Although often interpreted as a criticism of smoking, Van Gogh was an avid smoker himself, and continued to smoke until his death in 1890

Mulberry Tree, 1889
Van Gogh was staying at the Saint Paul Asylum in Saint-Remy when he painted The Mulberry Tree in October 1889. This was less than a year before he would die; The Mulberry Tree shows a tree from the garden of the asylum. The ground is made up of short quick brushstrokes of white and pale browns. It creates a strong contrast to the dark green and brown of the tree trunk. No matter what was happening in his life, whether he was living in a house with a friend, or a patient in a mental hospital, all Van Gogh could do was carry on and paint.

For the sky they swirl, each dab of color rolling with the clouds around the stars and moon. On the cypress tree they bend with the curve of the branches. The whole effect is ethereal and dreamlike. Self-Portrait, 1889
Van Gogh (1853-90) used portrait painting as a method of introspection. In this self portrait, the close up of his eyes reveals Van Gogh's internal crisis. His piercing eyes hold us transfixed, but their focus is not on what is happening outside, but inside his head. The rhythms of his brushstrokes spread across the planes of his face. This portrait depicts a very courageous image of a man trying to hold himself together as he wrestles with his inner fears. His features are hard and emaciated; his green-rimmed eyes seem intransigent and anxious. .

Klimt
Adele Bloch Bauer I, 1907
Beautiful Adele, trussed in an exotic dress among fragments of circling curves and squares; the mosaic stretches skyward and looms before our eyes. But in the subtlety of the tile, perhaps you will see - Adele is actually watching you. Trace the abstract, hieroglyphic stares through her dress, the shining gems across her body, then look her in the eye - if you dare - and marvel at the power of her cold stare, accentuated with opals creating interest in her eyes.

You can see it in his bent form, collapsed in final relief, and in her delicate submission to his charged embrace; BellaVetro's mosaic is a moment of infinite dissolution of pain into peace. Judith I, 1901
The sensuous nature of Klimt's work falls sumptuously over the tilted face of beguiling Judith, and is not lost in the soft shadows beneath her breast; the mosaic's luxurious flow over supple flesh and shimmering fabric almost blinds the viewers' eyes to the sunken head clenched before her. Holofernes, beheaded, but not the focus of the work - the astounding mosaic strikes us with the power of feminine beauty and the hidden force behind it.

As if with the fluidity of a brush, tile cascades smoothly along the curves of her breasts, fluttering down in a tumble of shapes and colors that fall, flirtatiously, over broad and intentionally suggestive hips. Klimt's dancer brushes against a flourish of yellow daisies, feigning innocence - but betrayed by red cheeks and seductive gaze. The warmth of woman in a mosaic fit for dreams.

The Kiss 1907-08
Klimt's work combines the soft intimacy and sensuousness of a man and woman, flowing together in close embrace. Amid the meadow of blooming flowers, the golden brilliance of the Gilded Period shines endlessly across the background. As you view the mosaic, notice the subtle longing of the woman's lips and romantic curve of her closed, impassioned eyes; each tile, hand-cut, lends itself to her beauty. The inspired decadence Klimt applied in his own work is illustrated in BellaVetro's mosaic, which uses pure gold leaf in its finish. BellaVetro's The Kiss lends itself to a beautiful backdrop in a flowered pavilion, a glimmering reflection of the sun in an atrium, or a bright relief against the candlelight of a romantic lounge.

Tamara Lempicka
Lady with gloves by Tamara Lempicka painted 1930
Tamara De Lempicka (1898 - 1980), was known as a frankly erotic painter who insisted upon Renaissance aesthetics, figuration, and painterly craft in modern art. In her Painting of Young Lady with Gloves, the stark clean lines of her composition and the striking green that she wears compel you to want to study how she approached her art. Lempicka's intention to express sensuality is clearly seen with her love of mannerism in the form of subtle gloves and gesture in this painting. On a large mosaic tiles, the young girl's idealized image conveys a sense of voluptuous beauty in an aristocratic style.

Tamara de Lempicka (1898 - 1980), the leading Art Deco painter who painted elegant figures that emanated allure. She was born in Poland, lived in Russia before fleeing to Paris during the Bolshevik Revolution. Generally, Lempicka painted her models as individuals, managing to capture their personalities. The "Portrait of the Marquis d'Afflitto", from 1925 reveals the forensic power she brought to bear on the social archetypes of her era. The Count lounging with nonchalant elegance, wearing a suit in youthful colors, unwittingly assumes the attitude of a Roman emperor.

Matisse
Creole Dancer, 1950
Creole Dancer (1950) Matisse (1869-1954) brings order to chaos by balancing colors. Creole dancer is based on sketches he made of a dancer invited to perform in his studio, and was made in a single day using left over pieces of painted paper. A dancing green figure with splashes of white hinting at a festive costume is full of movement, which is accentuated by the figure appearing diagonal on a background of vivid colored blocks with white stars. But in the subtlety of the tile, perhaps you will see - the background colors are balanced like a dancer's steps that only a real artist can do

Two Dancers, 1937
Matisse (1869-1954) loved the subject of the Dance. 'Two Dancers' (1937-8) is a good example of Matisse's increasing refinement of the 'cut out'. The dancers are literally pinned to a blue rectangular background which has a somewhat ambiguous spatial reading for the viewer. The brilliantly rendered black figure appears to be lifting or thrusting a fragmented white and yellow figure in the direction of the upper left part of the picture adding a dynamic quality to the composition. But in the subtlety of the mosaic tile, perhaps you will see - they represent the pure joy of living -- naked and free
